Here we are climbing up the spiral staircase, looking back down to see if anyone else is coming up behind. Spiral staircases are very common, however you may come across vertical ladders, straight stairs with banister rails or occasionally a lift.
Sometimes there may be a vertical ladder leading from the ground floor into the ringing room via a trapdoor. Note the trap door will be closed when everyone is in the ringing room. There are handgrips on the wall at floor level to assist getting through the opening. If this looks difficult, then visit our Abbey Tour after completing this section. The ringer's young children are not left out and are having great fun climbing the ladder.
