The Worcestershire and Districts Change Ringing Association
Peal Book

The Association has several peal books, most of which have now been deposited in the county archive. Two volumes are still held by the Association Archivist, one of which is the oldest record of peals from the very first rung in 1882, at the foundation of the Association, through to 1910. At that point, the records were continued in other volumes although further peals were sporadically added as illuminated entries later in the 20th Century. Many of these peals hold historical significance, not just for our Association but for change ringing nationally.

In 2021 the Association was fortunate to receive generous donations from members towards the creation of new illuminated entries in the original peal book based on previously designated notable or landmark peals. This would cover a substantial period of “missing” years in the volume between 1913 and 2006. Clare Griffiths from Exeter, whose work was well known at Worcester, was commissioned to produce the thirteen fully illuminated new entries. Clare was excited about the challenge of harmonising the new pages with the existing historical illuminations whilst giving them their own special style. Inspiration was taken from various elements of the historical designs and where appropriate to individual peals, used in the style of the newer pages. Despite Clare’s busy schedule the work was completed in just over 12 months and the entire book fully photographed for publication online. We are very grateful to Clare for her outstanding work and sympathetic approach.

Special thanks should also go to Dave Rawlings of Droitwich Camera Club who generously gave his time and expertise to photograph the project and edit the images.

We hope that this very special record can now be appreciated in detail, by all of our members and beyond, for all its artistic and historical ringing interest.
